Freaky – for Carol – Friday

I awake in a start.

A cow, a Brown Swiss, is standing at the foot of my bed.

She reads my mind, “this is not a dream.”

“Haha, I know it’s a dream. Tell me what you want so I can
sleep in peace.”

“I am raised in a feedlot, fed on grain, not grass.
Grain is an unnatural diet for cows, but raising cows in feedlots is cheaper than raising them on large pastures, where we can roam and graze on grass. Because we are in crowded feedlots , we are more likely to become sick and are more likely to be given routine antibiotics as a preventive measure.

“The farmers.” She made air quotes with its hooves when it said farmers. “Shoot us routinely with growth hormones so that we can reach slaughter weight faster. Because grain-fed cows grow faster, farmers can produce more meat in a shorter amount of time. After six months in a feedlot, they send us to slaughter.”

She walks over and whispers
‘Don’t get me started on how environmentally harmful feedlots are because of the concentration of wastes.”

“That’s … that’s nasty.”

“To say the least.”

“Aww, what’s that smell?”

The cow is swishing his tail back and forth like a pendulum. “That’s the Universe’s way to tell you this isn’t a dream.”

I run to the window and open it wide.

“Hey, Charles, you’re up early again.”

“Yeah, Michael, I can’t sleep.”

I turn back into the room and the cow is gone, in its place is a two-foot broccoli stalk.
The green veggie starts in exactly where the cow stopped. “So by reducing meat consumption, you reduce risks for obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes osteoporosis and some forms of cancer — particularly lung cancer and colon cancer.

“No way, I can go for a talking cow, maybe. But a two-foot talking broccoli stalk? This is some Freaky Friday shit.”

“Just think about it Charles, your body is requiring less sleep, you work out at the gym every day the past two weeks, your writing is much better, right?

“Yea, so?

“Every change you make in your life manifests itself this way. It’s just in your heightened sense at this time you can visualize the change.

I sit down in my easy chair and close my eyes. Is this really happening?

I open my eyes and a pig is eating the broccoli stalk.

“Haha, what’s your story?”

The pig stops chewing. ” Eating a diet high in raw fruits and vegetables provides you with a lot of essential nutrients with relatively few calories.”

“Out! Get out of my room. Hell, get out of my house.”

“What? You’re kicking me out?”

“That’s right, I want to get this on paper before I forget.”

Good morning, Charles

Loved the POV’s and the tongue-in-cheek humor. That must have been one hell of a hallucination. Well done!

No nits that I could see.
There’s a program on HBO called Vice who do weekly report on various issues, one of which focused on your message.

Take care and stay safe,
